NATO has taken over the coordination of Western military aid to Ukraine from the United States, Reuters reports.
The move comes after a delay of several months. It gives NATO the opportunity to play a more direct role in the war against Russia's invasion.
Diplomats acknowledge that the transfer of authority to the Alliance may have limited effect, given that the United States under Donald Trump could still seriously reduce support for Ukraine, as it is the dominant NATO power and supplies most of Kyiv's weapons.
The headquarters of NATO's new mission in Ukraine, called NATO Security Assistance and Training Ukraine (NSATU), is located at Clay Barracks, a US military base in the German city of Wiesbaden.
Prior to that, military assistance to Kyiv was coordinated by the Contact Group for the Defence of Ukraine (Ramstein).
The total number of NSATU personnel will be around 700, including troops stationed at the Supreme Allied Commander Europe in Belgium and at logistics bases in Poland and Romania.
