Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy revealed that four NATO member states oppose Ukraine’s accession to the Alliance, yet he believes the United States holds the decisive position. Speaking at a meeting with representatives of the Davos International Media Council, he named Germany, Hungary, and Slovakia alongside the United States as opposing members.
Zelenskyy criticised Germany and the US for their past dialogues with Russia, which he characterised as weak. “They lost this dialogue because they appealed to agreements with the Russians. As a Ukrainian, I ask: why were these negotiations conducted without us?” he said.
He emphasised that no country had the right to discuss Ukraine’s NATO membership without Ukraine’s involvement, whether in the 1990s, 2000s, or later.
Despite opposition, Zelenskyy noted that most NATO countries support Ukraine’s membership and reiterated his belief that if the US supports it, the remaining dissenting nations will follow suit.
He also expressed confidence that under Donald Trump’s leadership, should he support Ukraine’s accession, the country would secure its place in NATO.
