The Security Service of Ukraine is carrying out the first procedural actions with captured Chinese citizens.

This was announced by President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy in his address.

‘They are in Kyiv. They are talking to investigators. They give information about how they ended up at the front, how they became participants in this international crime, this Russian war against Ukraine. We also have information about other Chinese citizens in the Russian army - with names, surnames and a description of the specific ways such soldiers got into the Russian occupation contingent,’ the President of Ukraine said.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that Ukraine would use diplomatic channels to convey the necessary information to the Chinese side and, of course, to everyone in the world who heard Beijing say that this war should not be further fuelled and its scale should not be expanded.

‘Involving Chinese citizens in this war is definitely fuelling a bigger problem. And we need to respond to this as a matter of principle. Strengthening the occupation contingent and talking about peace are mutually exclusive. We also expect our partners to be principled in their support for Ukraine,’ the Head of State summed up.

  • Chinese citizens who are currently fighting against Ukraine began to serve in Russia last year. According to lb.ua, provided by intelligence services, Chinese citizens began arriving at Russian training centres mainly in the autumn of 2024. They have been signing contracts with the Russian army since the spring of 2024 and even since the summer of 2023.
  • The Ukrainian military took two Chinese soldiers prisoner. In total, they fought with six Chinese soldiers.
