One of the Hungarian Armed Forces’ Gripen fighter jets crashed this morning near the city of Szolnok, where the country’s military has an air base.
The news was announced by the country’s Prime Minister, Péter Magyar, Euronews reports.
According to Magyar, the pilot ejected successfully.
The cause of the crash is currently unknown, and an investigation is under way.
Defence Minister Romulusz Ruszin-Szendi said the pilot was taken to hospital by ambulance. No one else was injured in the crash, as the pilot did everything possible to ensure the aircraft came down on military territory.
- Hungary’s armed forces currently have 14 Gripen fighter jets, which are based in Kecskemét. The aircraft regularly take part in international operations and, in the second half of last year, patrolled the airspace of the Baltic states.
