Finland and Ukraine have concluded a drone deal aimed at strengthening co-operation in defence and security.
The document was signed by the presidents of both countries on 23 September in New York.
As stated on the Finnish government’s website, the agreement creates the conditions for joint production of defence goods, technology transfer, knowledge-sharing, and the implementation of research and development projects, including in the field of drone development. In addition, the agreement is intended to simplify bureaucratic procedures and accelerate the issuing of export licences to ensure the efficient supply of military goods.
According to Finland’s Prime Minister Petteri Orpo, the agreement not only supports Ukraine’s defence, but also helps Finland develop its own defence industry and prepare its armed forces for modern technological challenges.
- The Drone Deal is a format for intergovernmental agreements on drones and defence systems. It became known on 28 April this year, when Zelenskyy said that the export of Ukrainian weapons would “become a reality”. Agreements are already being developed with countries in the Middle East, the Persian Gulf, Europe and the Caucasus.
- The arrangement in this area envisages more than simply selling finished products; it is a long-term partnership involving joint production on the territory of the partner country, the transfer of combat experience and training.
