Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy believes Russia may intensify its attacks on Ukraine ahead of the US midterm elections.

He said this in an interview with the Spanish outlet EL PAÍS.

According to Zelenskyy, Vladimir Putin’s tactic is to further escalate the war. He links a possible increase in Russian attacks to elections for the US House of Representatives and part of the Senate, which are due to take place on 3 November.

The President noted that Kyiv has already warned members of Donald Trump’s team about the possibility of massive strikes on civilians. He spoke about this during a meeting with Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, who visited Kyiv on 6 September.

Putin Wants to Force People to Leave Kyiv

Speaking about Russian attacks on Kyiv, Zelenskyy said the city has been hit by between 300 and 500 strikes a day in recent weeks. He believes Moscow is seeking to paralyse the capital, force people to leave the city, and create chaos.

“Russia is not afraid of Europeans and does not feel the impact of sanctions,” Zelenskyy said.

The President also named China, India and Iran among the countries that, he said, are helping Russia circumvent sanctions, supplying equipment or sharing military experience, including in the field of drones.

Russia’s Shelling of Ukraine on 2 October

  • Almost 50 of the 100 drones launched by Russia overnight were jet-powered. Most of the UAVs were neutralised by Ukrainian troops, but there were hits.
  • In Kyiv, Shaheds struck the Southern Bridge several times, and in the morning a Russian attack damaged a high-rise building, killing one person. Overall, four people are known to have been injured. Civilian sites were also damaged in Kherson, Kharkiv, Kramatorsk and Sumy. Dnipropetrovsk Region, Odesa Region, Kharkiv Region, Kyiv Region, Poltava Region and Rivne Region were also hit.
