The UK has formally offered a “nuclear umbrella” to Estonia and eight other Northern European countries within the framework of the Joint Expeditionary Force.

This was reported by the commander of the Royal Navy, Admiral Gwyn Jenkins, according to ERR.

At the same time, this decision does not envisage nuclear weapons being stationed directly on Estonian territory.

The UK-led Joint Expeditionary Force includes, in addition to Estonia, the Netherlands, Iceland, Lithuania, Latvia, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark.

Former Defence Minister Hanno Pevkur explained that NATO allies take decisions on nuclear deterrence jointly. He said the offer is, above all, an important political signal to a potential adversary.
