German Chancellor Friedrich Merz arrived in Kyiv by train on Sunday, 4 October. He said the main purpose of his visit was to demonstrate Germany’s continued support for Ukraine.

Merz said this after arriving in the Ukrainian capital, DW reports.

According to the Chancellor, Ukraine will need Germany’s full support in the coming weeks.

“If Russia is not stopped, sooner or later its war machine will be turned against us,” Merz said.

He noted that Ukraine is preparing for a fifth winter at war, while Russia continues to shell cities, residential buildings and thermal power plants.

“Today I will tell President Zelenskyy: ‘You can continue to count on our help,’” the Chancellor said.

Merz also stressed cooperation between Germany and Ukraine in the defence sector. He said German and Ukrainian companies are jointly developing technologies intended to strengthen the security of both countries.

The German delegation included Economy Minister Katherina Reiche and representatives of companies from the arms and energy sectors.

The Chancellor was met by Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha.

The Foreign Ministry added that Friedrich Merz will hold talks with the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, covering the full range of bilateral, European and international issues on the agenda.

“Ukraine and Germany have built a strong strategic partnership, and we are determined to deepen it further. We highly value Germany’s strong leadership in Europe, which is especially important right now,” the Foreign Minister said.

Sybiha also emphasised that the meetings will discuss strengthening Ukraine, its defence capability and resilience, as well as shared European security.
