The Estonian government plans to save more than €32m over three years by slowing the growth of salaries for senior officials.

Under the approved state budget strategy, the period of reduced salary indexation for officials has been extended until the end of 2030, ERR reports.

Initially, the measure was planned to apply from April 2024 to March 2028. The category of senior officials includes members of the government, judges, the Prosecutor General, the Secretary of State, the State Conciliator and the Gender Equality Commissioner.

At the same time, Estonian judges believe that such actions by the government may run counter to the Constitution, and have already challenged the previous restriction on payments. The case has now reached the highest court, which has accepted two complaints for consideration.
