At Berlin’s former Tempelhof Airport, which operated from 1920 to 2008, Austrian choreographer and performance artist Florentina Holzinger will open the 2027/28 season of the Komische Oper Berlin with a new production about the war, Monopol Magazin reports.

The title of the piece has not yet been disclosed. According to the description, it aims to explore the ideological driving forces of war, presenting both new and historical compositions.

The opera’s artistic directors, Susanne Moser and Philip Bröking, called the upcoming production an “extraordinary event”, and described Holzinger as one of the most outstanding voices of our time, challenging genres.

As a reminder, in August Holzinger visited several cities in Ukraine to gather material for her next work and to speak with Ukrainian artists.

The premiere of the new piece in Berlin is scheduled for 18 September 2027.

About Florentina Holzinger:

  • Austrian choreographer and performance artist;
  • Known for radical works that combine circus, ballet and operatic techniques with feminist perspectives on the body;
  • In 2024, her opera Sancta (Holy), featuring piercing, unsimulated sex and blood — both real and fake — was criticised as a “caricature of the Holy Mass”;
  • In 2025, in the show Ophelia's Got Talent, Holzinger involved children who appeared on stage alongside naked adults;
  • This year, Holzinger represented Austria at the Venice Biennale with the performance Seaworld Venice, in which the performer hung naked upside down inside a giant bronze bell.
