Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, Chair of the European Parliament’s Committee on Security and Defence, criticised US President Donald Trump for calling for Volodymyr Zelenskyy to resign.
She said that with such remarks, the American leader is taking the side of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. The MEP wrote about this on the social network X.
“If Trump calls on Zelenskyy to resign, he is unequivocally taking the side of a murderer. Ukraine’s leadership is decided solely by Ukrainian men and women in free elections, not the White House and certainly not the Kremlin,” Strack-Zimmermann stressed.
She also said that Putin must face a tribunal in The Hague, and that his victims should receive proper support.
In the MEP’s view, by attacking allies and democratic institutions, Trump is weakening the West and harming democracy. She noted that Europe can no longer rely unconditionally on the US as a partner.
Strack-Zimmermann urged European countries to maintain a clear course and continue supporting Ukraine.
- On 10 October, Trump said that Ukraine should choose a new leader who would be able to negotiate an end to the war. He also said that President Zelenskyy is “allegedly not ready to make deals”.
- Before that, Trump reached an agreement with Putin on supplying Russian fuel to the American and global markets. According to the White House chief, Russia will “immediately” deliver more than 300,000 tonnes of fuel, and later a further 1.5 million tonnes.
