The Security Service of Ukraine has dismantled a scheme involving employment at the State Customs Service and admission to its specialised university.
As reported on the SBU website, officers detained the deputy head of one of the departments within the State Customs Service’s Personnel Department.
According to the investigation, the official took bribes to place men liable for military service on the customs payroll, which subsequently made it possible to arrange a deferment from mobilisation. The official also, for money, helped applicants gain admission to the specialised university, using connections among the institution’s leadership. The official priced these “services” at $25,000.
SBU officers documented several instances of money being handed over and detained the official. He has been served with a notice of suspicion for organising the solicitation and receipt of an unlawful benefit.
Investigators are currently deciding on a preventive measure for the detainee. He faces up to 12 years’ imprisonment with confiscation of property.
