On 4 November, North Korea launched several missiles towards the Sea of Japan. South Korea’s military believes they were short-range ballistic missiles.
Yonhap reports, citing a statement from South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS).
According to the military, the missiles were launched in the morning from the Sondok area in Hamgyong Province. South Korea is currently analysing their technical characteristics jointly with the United States.
Preliminary information indicates that the missiles travelled a distance of less than 300 kilometres. The military does not rule out that they may have been short-range ballistic missiles.
Shin Jong-woo, Secretary-General of the Korea Defence and Security Forum, suggested they were a Hwasong-11 Ra tactical surface-to-surface ballistic missile.
South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said it is monitoring North Korea’s actions together with the United States and remains ready to respond to possible provocations.
If the missile type is confirmed, this would be North Korea’s third ballistic missile launch in the past week.
- Last week, North Korea fired about 10 ballistic missiles into the sea off its east coast.
