Security supremo: Ukraine cannot do without conscription yet

A new wave of mobilization will be announced if the situation on the front aggravates.

Ukraine cannot give up army conscription as yet, the Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council Oleksandr Turchynov said on 4 August.

In the situation of external threat, the country is in need of ongoing training of it citizens for military service, he went on to say.

At the same time, Turchynov said, the share of conscripts in the army is shrinking.

All the mobilized soldiers will be demobilized in the second half of this year.

However, in case the situation on the front aggravates, the authorities are ready to announce a new wave of mobilization, Turchynov warned.

Ukraine has risen the conscription age from 18 to 20 years.
