Visa-free travel may start late February – early March, says Taras Kachka

An expert in international affairs Taras Kachka believes that Ukraine can expect the visa-free travel with the European Union no earlier than in late February - early March.

"The procedure of the final approval of visa-free travel for Ukraine has been unblocked. We may see some resolutions approved in December, but more likely, according to the normal schedule, they in January," the expert told a roundtable conference in Gorshenin Institute on 9 December.

"Should the decisions be confirmed in January, the documents will have to be made public in the Official Journal the European Union and shall come into force in 20 days. It means we are talking about the end of February - early March," Kachka said.

"Expert opinions on the terms of visa-free regime have become our national game, the expert observed and stressed that only procedural formalities are now standing on the way of obtaining the visa-free travel.

In Kachka's opinion, Ukraine could have obtained visa-free travel long before and blamed Ukrainian politicians, in particular previous leaders, for this has not happened before.

He reminded that all 144 of the EU requirements for visa-free travel with Ukraine were about the internal policies.

"This plan has been implemented for five years, it began under the previous president. We only accelerated [the implementation] in 2014, and we all have observed how the story has unfolded with the electronic declaration, the formation of NABU, NACP, etc. That is, it would be much easier for our diplomats to do their job if our internal policy were more effective," he said.

"Instead, we are now facing the migration crisis situation."
