The government abolished the National Police Department to counter drug-related crime, said the government decree made public on 22 December.

National Police was tasked to take over the implementation of the functions and powers of the liquidated subdivision.

The department of countering drug-related crime was set up last October year, instead of the Office for the fight against drug trafficking with Ilya Kiva at the head. Interior Minister Arsen Avakov said that the move would help fight corruption among law enforcement agencies responsible for the fight against drugs.

After a series of scandals Kiva was dismissed in May 2016. In August, he was succeeded by Andriy Kikhtenko.
