The major economic crimes task force of the General Prosecutor's Office along with the Department of Internal Security of the National Police are searching the building of the National Police in Kyiv Region, the PGO headquarters said in a release on Wednesday, 14 June.
The case concerns the investigation of a major embezzlement of state funds, the release said.
The PGO said they believe that that the officials of the police financial security and accounting department in 2015–2016 has embezzled almost 1mn hryvnias intended for the payment of salaries of police officers. The money has been transferred to fake bank accounts.
"The investigators of the PGO on 14 June are conducting searches at places of work and homes of the senior management of the financial support and accounting department of the Main Directorate of the National Police in Kyiv Region. During the searches, we have seized the documents confirming the criminal activities of law enforcement officials," the PGO said.
The officials involved in the commission of this crime are looking at up to 12 years in prison and confiscation of property.
