The EU Ambassador to Ukraine Hugues Mingarelli expressed disappointment over the delays with the appointment of new members of the Central Election Commission.
"The stability of the political system depends on the trust that citizens have for elected politicians and the state apparatus, where much can be done very quickly. It is necessary to progressively promote the renewal of the political class. However, for this to happen, a new election law is needed and need a new Central Electoral Commission. For some reason I do not understand, these reforms are put on hold. When shall we see a new election law and the appointment of new members of the CEC? " Mingarelli said on 15 June at the 7th National Expert Forum, organized by Gorshenin Institute.
The majority of the CEC members retain their posts although their seven-year tenures ended on 1 June, 2014. Last summer, Poroshenko asked the Rada to dismiss 12 members of the CEC and appoint 11 new ones. The parliament failed to even consider this motion. The coalition explained that the proposed candidates would not gain enough votes in the legislature.
