Ukraine to buy 2 million tons of American coal

Preliminary arrangements have been reached. "Firm" contracts are pending.

Ukraine has reached a preliminary agreement on the purchase of 2 million tons of coal from the USA, President Petro Poroshenko said in an interview with the TV channels Ukraina, ICTV and Inter on Sunday 25 June. "[The US energy] minister Rick Perry is to visit Ukraine in August. We will have a lot to talk about, including the participation of US companies in the privatization of energy companies. Also, you know that after the seizure of Ukrainian enterprises we refused to buy coal from in the occupied territories. To ensure the transparency of the energy market, we agreed that American coal from Pennsylvania [will be purchesd] at competitive prices. We will have a guaranteed supply of at least 2 million tons of coal. All the preconditions are in place, now its time to sign contracts," Poroshenko said.

Ukraine is buying coal in Russia, South Africa and Poland.

Ukraine has been having to import coal since militants seized control over anthracite mines amid Russian aggression in Donbas.
