Nuclear power unit stopped over malfunction

For the first time in the history of Khmelnytsky NPP, two units stay idle.

The Khmelnytsky Nuclear Power Plant at 01:57 at night disconnected its power unit No. 2.

In a report the national nuclear power generating company Energoatom said that the reason for stopping was a leakage on the sealing surface of the cover-movement block on the control and protection system drive".

The unit is in the "hot stop" state. The event is rated at "0" on the INES scale (there is no security significance).

Ukrainian News said with a reference to an informed source that it is for the first time in the KhNPP history that both of its power units were switched off simultaneously, since unit 1 was stopped for capital repair two month ago.

According to a report on the site of the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine, the power unit No. 2 will be under repair until 9 January.

Khmelnitsky NPP is located in the city of Netishyn. It runs two VVER-1000 power units with a total capacity of 2,000 MW (commissioned in 1987 and 2004). The main purpose of the station is to cover the deficit of electric capacities in the western region of Ukraine.
