Enemy shells Kharkiv again, central Freedom Square under attack

On the morning of March 1, the Russian military shelled Kharkiv civilian infrastructure again. This time with missiles.

Adviser to the Minister of Internal Affairs, Anton Herashchenko, reported on his Telegram that missiles were exploding on the central city square - named Freedom (Svoboda). This is the square where the Kharkiv Regional State Administration is located. It was damaged during the attack. According to preliminary data, it was hit twice. 

The State Emergency Service of Ukraine added that according to the information available, the Kharkiv Regional State Administration building, Opera House, the philharmonic, and part of the residential district (mostly 4-5 story residential houses) were hit. 

“The departments of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine cannot start the work due to the shellings. We ask Kharkiv residents to stay in the shelters, pray for our fighters,” the rescuers said. 

Based on the video on social media, Russia opened fire at the city center near 8 a.m. They also shelled the square of Five Corners (Piaty Kutiv). 

The head of the Kharkiv Regional State Administration, Oleh Synehubov, said that today, Kharkiv oblast expects artillery shellings and bombardments with aviation involvement. 

There were chaotic shellings in all directions during the night: in the Lypetsk, Belhorod, Chuhuiv, and other directions. 

In the last 24 hours, the State Emergency Service of Ukraine officers responded to 44 “alarm” signals in the Kharkiv region. Sixty-nine explosive devices were neutralized, State Emergency Service says on Facebook

Twenty-four fires caused by enemy shellings were put out during the last day. 

Kharkiv city:

- Gurevich street, a car was on fire.

- Batumi street, a garage and a vehicle were on fire. A man was injured in the shelling.

- Kiltseva street, five cars were on fire, two people were injured, and one died as a result of artillery shelling.

- Traktobudivnykiv street, five garages, and five cars were on fire.

- Svitla street, garage, and a car were on fire.

- August 23 lane, seven cars were on fire.

- Balakirev street, two cars were on fire.

- Buchmy street, the garage was on fire.

Kharkiv region:

- Rohan village, a house was on fire, one person was injured, and one died as a result of artillery shelling.

- August 23rd street, a garage was on fire

- Osynova street, a house was on fire.

- Kiltseva street, eight people were injured in the shelling, and 35 people were evacuated.

- Izyum district, Balaklia, a house was on fire.

- Kharkiv district, Rohan village, a house was on fire.

- Kyrgyz street, a missile hit a power substation with a capacity of 110/6 kW, and three tons of transformer oil was burning.

- Tancopia street, ten garages were on fire.

- Morozov street, a warehouse was on fire.

- Yenakiyevska street, a gas pipeline was burning at the supply to a residential building.

- Nemyshlyanska street, a warehouse building was burning.

- Traktobudivelnykiv lane, burned garage.

- Kharkiv district, Derhachi, a house was on fire.

Verkhnohiivska street, due to the shell hit, four cars were on fire, 15 vehicles were damaged. The gas main to the building and the windows of the secondary school №108 were damaged.

Most of the day yesterday, the enemy was shelling Kharkiv from MRLS “Grad” rocket artillery. The fire was carried out on civilian infrastructure. People who left their shelters to get water were killed. Eighty-seven residential buildings were destroyed, at least 11 Kharkiv residents were killed, more than 100 people were injured. 

The shelling of Kharkiv is a war crime, the President of Ukraine emphasized. Dozens of recordings from eyewitnesses prove that it is not a single false volley but a deliberate elimination of people. Russians knew where they were hitting. Volodymyr Zelensky stressed that there would undoubtedly be a tribunal for this crime.
