The Latvian Parliament unanimously approved the decision "On granting Ukraine the status of a candidate country for accession to the European Union". This was announced by the Ukrainian Ambassador in Latvia Oleksandr Mishchenko.
"Any of the Latvian deputies voted against, and no one abstained. In their decision, the deputies recognize the need to use every opportunity to help Ukraine withstand Russian aggression to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity," he said.
Given that Ukraine has applied for full membership in the European Union, the Saeima of Latvia:
-
supports granting Ukraine EU candidate status, as well as Ukraine’s full-fledged accession to the EU in the future;
-
calls on EU institutions to work on granting EU candidate status to Ukraine;
-
calls on all EU Member States to support Ukraine’s effort to become a full-fledged Member State of the EU;
-
affirms the readiness of Latvia to provide broad support to Ukraine on its path towards becoming a full-fledged Member State of the European Union.
On 1 March, the European Parliament recommended granting Ukraine EU candidate status.
