The State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate has assessed the state of the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant after shelling by Russian invaders.

The State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate noted that the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant, had been seized by the military forces of the Russian Federation after heavy fighting in the streets of Energodar.

As a result of the shelling, the ZNPP industrial site:

  • Damage was caused to the building of the reactor unit 1 of ZNPP;

  • Two artillery shells landed in the Dry Storage of the spent nuclear fuel area.

"The degree of damage to the structures and systems of these nuclear installations and their impact on safety require additional assessments based on detailed surveys by the special services of the operating organization," the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate declares.

The fire, which occurred during the night due to enemy shelling of the ZNPP industrial site, caused significant damage to the building of the training center located directly near the ZNPP industrial site.

At the time of the Russian occupation of the ZNPP site, operational staff were on shift and had to work in their workplaces for more than 24 hours. There were no fatalities or injuries among ZNPP staff. However, some staff was treated for stress.

Operational staff are currently rotated. It is tentatively planned that the new duty will run until 23:00.

The operating staff monitor the condition of the power plants and ensure their exploitation. At the same time, the work of the staff is carried out under the pressure of armed Russian military forces that have captured the ZNPP.

Conditions of power units:

Power Unit 1: Planned and preventive repairs.

Power Unit 2: Currently operates for own use.

Power Unit 3: disconnected from the grid, cooling the nuclear plant and converting to a cold stop.

Power Unit 4: In operation, the power capacity has been increased to 825 MW, and the power unit's loading continues.

Power units 5, 6: Nuclear units are being cooled.

No change in radiation status in Zaporizhzhya region, radiation gamma-phone within normal parameters.
