Russian opera singer Netrebko, who refused to condemn the Russian war against Ukraine publicly, was fired from the Metropolitan Opera. According to the Metropolitan Opera statement, she will be replaced in “Turandot” opera by soprano Liudmyla Monastyrska.
“It is a great artistic loss for the Met and for opera. Anna is one of the greatest singers in Met history, but with Putin killing innocent victims in Ukraine, there was no way forward,” said Met General Manager Peter Gelb.
In spring, she was scheduled to perform in Puccini's “Turandot” and Verdi's “Don Carlo” next season.
According to the current information, the Ukrainian soprano of Ukrainian National Opera, Liudmyla Monastyrska, will replace her in “Turandot”. Her replacement in “Don Carlo” will be announced later, according to the Met.
Earlier, Netrebko did not publicly comment on Putin's actions. At the same time, she is known as a supporter of the so-called “LDNR”. Netrebko made a significant donation to the activities of the Donetsk Opera House in 2014 and was photographed with “Speaker of the Parliament of Novorossia” and “Flag of Novorossia”.
