The Biden administration is willing to move ahead with a ban on Russian oil imports into the United States without the participation of EU allies, Reuters says, referring to its resources.

Biden today had a video conference with France, Germany, and the United Kingdom. A ban on Russian oil imports was one of the topics.

The White House is also negotiating with congressional leaders who are working on fast-tracking legislation banning Russian oil imports.

The final decision hasn't been made yet. In case it happens it is likely to be made by the US only, the senior American official said to Reuters.

According to Reuters, the biggest buyer of Russian oil has rejected plans to ban energy imports. 

Germany is accelerating its plans to expand its use of alternative energy sources but cannot halt imports of Russian energy overnight, German chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Monday.

As a reminder, the White House slapped sanctions on exports of technologies to Russia's refineries and the Nord Stream 2.

Earlier US State Secretary Antony Blinken said that the US is seeking to degrade Russia's status as a leading world producer of oil and to reduce energy dependence on Russia in the long run.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a ban on Russian oil imports on 1 March 2022.
