No offshores: the Bahamas joins sanctions against Russia

The Commonwealth of the Bahamas has joined the sanctions against Russia. This is said in a statement by the state's Central Bank, reports Reuters.

"The Central Bank of the Bahamas has issued directives to financial institutions and banned financial institutions under its control from operating with parties under sanctions from the United States and other Western countries in response to the war in Ukraine," the statement said.

Reuters reported on Monday that oil and fuel tankers controlled by Russia's Sovcomflot had been diverted to the Bahamas after failing to deliver cargo due to sanctions.

"Regulated organizations that have a license or permit to operate in or within the Bahamas (are instructed) not to participate in agreements with people, organizations or businesses related to Russia and Belarus that are subject to sanctions," - the statement by the Central Bank says.

The Bahamas is a well-known shadow area where offshore companies are not subject to taxation and are not required to report annually.
