The “Ukrainian Witness” project released a video story on their YouTube channel about the life of the Kharkiv subway, which has now become a shelter for hundreds of people. Kharkiv residents have set up their “underground” lives and continue doing their usual things.
Because of the “friendly operation” by the Russian forces, hundreds of Kharkiv locals had to leave their homes searching for a safe place. For some, the stations of the Kharkiv subway became such places. Here the people’s routine has its charm.
Everyone knows that the subway is the safest shelter during the bombing and even nuclear strikes. Probably the whole country saw the photos from the Kyiv subway, where the capital’s residents spend a few nights using the stations as shelter. So now the subway’s function has changed. Now the people are organizing their routines here to always be safe in case of airstrikes.
A similar situation is with the Kharkiv subway. There are hundreds of people here: those sheltering from the shellings, those who had to flee their houses, and those whose houses are destroyed.
“People live, sleep, eat, give birth, get ill, get better,” - the Kharkiv subway worker says.
People completely set up their lives here: the residents have set up their tents arranged sleeping places. They play with their kids, walk their dogs, eat, and clean. People in the subway stations constantly receive humanitarian aid: medicine, food, hygiene products, and kids' clothes.
“We live amicably here. Here is the whole row of our neighbors; we are helping each other. We want the war to be over,” the temporary resident of the subway station says.

Vitaliy Deineha, the founder of the “Come back alive” Fund, which supports the Ukrainian army, started the “Ukrainian Witness” media project.
The volunteers from the “Come back alive” fund work closely with Ukrainian forces and receive exclusive photos and videos. So Ukrainian Witness will publish this content with the English commentary so that more people in other countries understand what is going on in Ukraine.
If you became a Ukrainian Witness and have videos from the scene: destroyed infrastructure, the results of the shelling, shot enemy equipment, pro-Ukrainian rallies - please send them to the following email: [email protected]
The volunteers will prepare the publication so that the whole world sees it.
