The mayor of Melitopol Ivan Fedorov was released from captivity by the occupiers, where he remained for 5 days.
The release was announced by Deputy Head of the Office of the President Kyrylo Tymoshenko.
"Vanya is safe. We have just talked to him with the President and the Head of the Office. Very soon Ivan will return to his duties as mayor of Melitopol, Ukraine," Tymoshenko said.
He said that Fedorov's release took place as part of a special operation.
The Russian military abducted Fedorov at the crisis center, where he organized aid to the city's civilians. Russia used a group of 10 invaders to capture the mayor.
He is not the only mayor who was captured by the occupiers after refusing to work for them.
