Canada imposes new sanctions on the Belarusian leadership for support of Russia's aggression against Ukraine. This was stated by Foreign Minister Melanie Jolie, according to the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Canada.
The new measures impose restrictions on 22 high-ranking Belarusian Defense Ministry officials who supported the attack, including allowing their country to serve as a launching pad for the Russian invasion.
The sanctions, according to the Canadian Foreign Ministry, show Canada's pressure on the Belarusian leadership to stop supporting Vladimir Putin's attack on Ukraine.
“The world is horrified to witness the senseless violence occurring in Ukraine. Just as Canada is imposing severe sanctions on the Russian regime, Belarusian leadership must also be held accountable for enabling and supporting Vladimir Putin’s unprovoked attacks. Canada implores Alexander Lukashenko to end his support for the Russian invasion. We will not hesitate to take further action. The world is watching," said Melanie Jolie.
Earlier, Canada imposed sanctions against deputies of the State Duma who voted for recognition of independence of separate areas of Donetsk and Luhansk areas, a ban on operations with sovereign debt of Russia, sanctions against two large Russian banks. It also imposed sanctions on 58 individuals and organizations associated with Russia (Russia's political elite and family members, members of the Radbez [Russian Security Council]), Private Military Company Wagner, and revoked import permits from Russia. It also imposed sanctions on key Rosneft and Gazprom employees. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced a ban on Russian oil imports.
