Evacuation from "hot spots" in Kyiv region

The "Ukrainian Witness" project showed how residents of the Kyiv region are being evacuated from places where hostilities and shelling by the Russian occupiers are taking place.

Currently, thousands of Kyiv residents are under constant fire and occupation by Russian troops. Many towns and villages were left without communications and are now on the verge of a humanitarian catastrophe. By the joint effort of the authorities a number of "humanitarian corridors" were agreed for the evacuation of civilians and the delivery of humanitarian aid to cities in need.

"The main areas of our activity were Bucha and Brovary districts. Vyshhorod district worked independently without coordination of "green corridors". It was important for us to take out as many people as possible. At first it was very difficult to establish communication, because the Russians did not follow the agreements. Very often the buses returned empty, and people remained on the maidans, on the squares, waiting for an opportunity to leave, but the occupiers didn't allow to make it ", - the chief of police of the Kyiv area Andrey Nebitov told.

Despite the tendency of Russian troops to disrupt evacuation measures, people are able to "break through" from the "hot spots" and find a safe place. Volunteers help the evacuees on the ground: they prepare and distribute food, provide medical and psychological assistance.

"We were under fire for three days, then we were sheltered in a dormitory for another 2 days and on the third day we broke through. We were overslept by the Russian military," said an evacuated resident of Vorzel.

Despite successful evacuation routes, many people are still in danger, as they are still not able to leave for various reasons.

During 17 March 2022 from the Kyi area 1660 civilians managed to evacuate. Earlier, "Ukrainian Witness" told how Kyiv once again cleared up the consequences of Russia's attack.

The Ukrainian Witness project was launched by Vitaliy Deinega, the founder of the Return to Alive Ukrainian Army Relief Fund.
