The United States and its Western allies are assessing whether Russia can be excluded from the Group G20 (updated)

The United States and its Western allies are assessing whether Russia should remain within the Group of Twenty (G20) grouping of major economies following its invasion of Ukraine, according to Reuters.

The news agency also reported that Poland suggested to US officials to replace Russia in G20 that the suggestion had received a "positive response".

President Biden's National Security Adviser, Jake Sullivan, confirmed that the White House is currently examining Russia's exclusion from the G20.

The likelihood that any bid to exclude Russia outright would be vetoed by others in the club - which includes China, India, Saudi Arabia and others - is pretty high, according to Reuters analysts.

This, in turn, has raised the prospect of some countries instead skipping G20 meetings this year. Jakarta declined to comment.

Russia used to be part of the G7. The G7 was expanded to a new "G8" format including Russia during a period of warmer ties in the early 2000s. But Moscow was indefinitely suspended from that club after its annexation of Crimea in 2014.

The G20 is a strategic multilateral platform connecting the world's major developed and emerging economies, with the united goal to secure future global economic growth and prosperity and coordinate actions on issues affecting the world economy, including climate change and development.
