Polish PM: NATO members support idea of peacekeeping mission in Ukraine

The Prime Minister of Poland, Mateusz Morawiecki, said that other NATO members support the idea of a peacekeeping mission in Ukraine. Still, they are waiting for joint approval from the Alliance. RBK-Ukraina reported this with reference to RMF 24.

"We already know from the media that there have been positive reactions from Denmark and Lithuania over the past few days. Today, other states-members have expressed their approval, but they are waiting for some support and a collective voice from NATO. We also emphasize that this should be a focused NATO mission, "said the Head of the Polish Government in Brussels at a press conference after the Council of Europe.

Morawiecki noted that some leaders present at the summit were skeptical about the initiative of Polish Deputy Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski on a peacekeeping mission in Ukraine.

"I would like them to imagine that the whole Ukraine is becoming Mariupol, a bombed-out city, a place, where people are running from," he said and added that then the other countries would have to accept "dozens of millions of refugees."

"I think that today, looking at the barbaric behavior of Putin and the Russians, Russian soldiers, one can imagine the worst-case scenarios. Unfortunately, I can imagine them, so the presentation of this concept is finding more support," Morawiecki said.

During his visit to Kyiv, Deputy Prime Minister of Poland and the Law and Justice Party leader, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, said that Ukraine needs a "peacekeeping mission of NATO or a broader international coalition." In addition, the government of Denmark expressed its readiness to send troops to Ukraine as part of a peacekeeping mission.
