The European Commission will today offer a new package of sanctions against russia, which includes a ban on russian coal imports, restrictions on russian freight carriers, and blocking technology exports.
The Wall Street Journal reported about it.
The proposed ban on russian coal will be the first time the EU has agreed to block imports of one of russia's main energy sources. According to the publication, the EU countries have not yet agreed on whether to impose a ban on imports of russian oil and gas, although the position on the introduction of a gradual embargo on russian oil supplies is growing.
On Monday, French President Emmanuel Macron said for the first time that he supported a ban on imports of russian coal and oil.
The European Commission is also expected to impose a ban on road haulage and maritime transport, with two exceptions: humanitarian trade and energy supplies.
According to Bloomberg, the EU will also impose restrictions on imports of potash fertilizers from russia and belarus and ban the export of some high-tech equipment to russia.
Speaking on Tuesday morning, European Commission Vice President Valdis Dombrovskis said the EU was determined to respond decisively to the killing of civilians in Ukraine and russia's aggression against Ukraine.
"The EU must offer a strong and reliable package of sanctions due to the atrocities," he said.
All 27 EU member states must approve the package of sanctions.
Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia will begin the process of complete isolation from russia.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell will arrive in Kyiv this week.
