United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has arrived in Ukraine.

He announced this on his Twitter.

"I have arrived in Ukraine after visiting Moscow. We will continue our work to expand humanitarian support & secure the evacuation of civilians from conflict zones. The sooner this war ends, the better – for the sake of Ukraine, Russia, and the world," Guterres posted.

On 26 April, Guterres visited Moscow. He met with russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. The UN Secretary-General also met with Putin. They discussed proposals for humanitarian aid and the evacuation of civilians from conflict zones related to the situation in Mariupol.

At the end of the meeting, Guterres' spokesman said that Putin had agreed to evacuate civilians from Azovstal. However, the next day, the Kremlin informed that "there were no specific agreements on assistance in evacuating civilians from Azovstal."

Earlier, the President of Ukraine stated that he hoped that Guterres' visit to Moscow and then to Kyiv was "really about help, not about political tourism." Zelensky also stated that he expects a hundred percent support from the UN Secretary-General. He announced that Guterres was likely to visit places where the russian military tortured Ukrainians.
