Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had a call with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, informs the website of the Presidential Office.

Zelenskyy expressed his gratitude to UN Secretary-General for his efforts in organizing the evacuation of the Ukrainian citizens from Azovstal plant. He also informed Guterres about the successful first stage when 121 people were evacuated and voiced his hope for the successful continuation of the evacuative operation that is still going.

Ukraine’s President thanked the UN and the International Committee of the Red Cross for the demonstration that progress is possible even in the most difficult humanitarian crises.

“The whole world found out about the part of the UN and the ICRC in this. That demonstrated that the international organizations may be efficient,” mentioned Zelenskyy.

He also asked the UN Secretary-General to support the evacuation of all wounded people from Azovstal.

“The lives of people who are still there are at stake. Every man and every woman are important to us. We are asking for your help in their rescue,” he emphasized.

Earlier, Guterres assured that he is doing his best to rescue people.

On 27 April 2022, the UN Secretary-General came to Ukraine. Before that he visited Moscow where he had a meeting with minister of foreign affairs of the rf Sergey Lavrov and russian president vladimir putin. They discussed the suggestions of humanitarian help and evacuation for civilians from the conflict zone because of the situation in Mariupol.

While the meeting of the UN Secretary-General and Zelenskyy in Kyiv, russia carried out an airstrike on the capital.
