A meeting of the NATO Military Committee will be held in Brussels on 19 May, with the participation of the Chiefs of General Staff of Ukraine, Finland, and Sweden.

This is reported on the Alliance's website.

This meeting will allow 30 commanders of NATO forces to meet and discuss issues of strategic importance to the Alliance.

"NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg will join the Chiefs of General Staff at the first meeting to discuss the geostrategic context and preparations for the Madrid Summit in July," the statement said.

The second session will be devoted to russia's war against Ukraine. The Chiefs of General Staff of Finland, Sweden, and Ukraine will join the discussions.

The NATO Military Committee is NATO's highest military body. It is also the main military advisory body for NATO's civilian governing bodies - the North Atlantic Council and the Nuclear Planning Group. The North Atlantic Council performs the function of the overall political leadership of the Military Committee; as appropriate, it is also done by the Defense Planning Committee and the NATO Nuclear Planning Group.

After russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, non-aligned Sweden and Finland have expressed their readiness to join NATO. U.S. officials say countries could do so in the summer. On May 2, the Finnish newspaper iltalehti.fi, citing government sources, wrote that on 12 May, President Sauli Niinisto said he supported the country's joining the NATO bloc.

Sweden borders russia via the Baltic Sea, and Finland has a land border of 1,271.8 km and a sea border of 54 km.

After the statements from Finland and Sweden, russia began threatening countries with rising prices and taxes, rising tensions along the borders, "Iskanders" and nuclear-powered ships "literally at arm's length from their own homes."

The President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that if NATO offers Ukraine to join the Alliance tomorrow, Ukraine will join. According to him, a third of NATO members oppose Ukraine's accession because they fear russia.

Commenting on the atrocities of the russian military in Bucha, Zelenskyy noted that this was the result of 14 years of climbdowns to russia, since Ukraine was not admitted to NATO in 2008 due to Germany's refusal.
