Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency Rafael Grossi turned to the idea of establishing a Nuclear Safety and Security Protection Zone at the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant in the name of UN security, his Twitter account states.
“This is based on the findings from our mission to the power plant there, outlined in our new report,” he noted.
According to him, the current situation is untenable and till the war ends urgent interim measures are needed to prevent a nuclear accident caused by military means.
“This can be achieved by the immediate establishment of a protection zone,” he emphasized. IAEA is ready to start the consultations leading to its establishment.

The IAEA published a report on the results of the mission to the ZNPP, making seven recommendations.
Among the proposals: reserve an external power supply line, which will be available at any time; practice emergency response functions; establish reliable and redundant communication channels with the ZNPP and start the urgent creation of a nuclear safety zone and a protection zone at the nuclear power plant.
The head of national nuclear energy company Enerhoatom, Petro Kotin, said that the conclusions of the mission of the IAEA should lead to the de-occupation of the ZNPP.
The Ukrainian side also demands a humanitarian corridor from the territories around the ZNPP to evacuate the civilians.
