The outbreak of polio, which began at the end of last year, continues in Ukraine, the press service of the Health Ministry has reported.
At the beginning of the outbreak, cases of the disease were detected in Rivne and Transcarpathian regions. An 18-month-old child was paralysed.
The Health Ministry stressed the importance of vaccination, which includes six doses, and said that the disease is caused not by the vaccine, but by the virus.
"There is no cure for polio, but vaccination saves from it. A full course of vaccination according to the National Vaccination Calendar protects a child for life," the Health Ministry noted.
The ministry recalled that at the age of 2 and 4 months, the inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) is administered to the infant. At the age of 6 and 18 months, the child should be vaccinated with oral polio vaccine. It is repeated at 6 and 14 years.
