Ukraine announces the creation of mixed medical commissions for the exchange of prisoners. This was reported by the representative of the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine Andriy Yusov, Military Media Center reports.
"This will help to release Ukrainian prisoners and help Russians to return their prisoners. This is the third time in world history that such an initiative will be implemented," he said at a briefing.
According to the Geneva Conventions, three doctors are involved in the commission: one doctor from the country holding the prisoners of war and two doctors from neutral countries.
The representative of the Coordination Headquarters emphasised that Ukraine had previously returned seriously wounded Russians quickly.
"Ukraine is a democratic country that abides by international law. We are obliged to ensure proper treatment of all prisoners of war, regardless of their nationality," said Yusov.
He emphasised the importance of this step for the release of the prisoners and expressed his gratitude to all those involved in the implementation of this initiative.
Some of the Ukrainian servicemen who were returned to Ukraine from captivity on Monday, 7 August, have acute chronic diseases.
As a result of the exchanges, 70 National Guard servicemen who captured by Russia at the Chornobyl nuclear power plant in 2022 were returned to Ukraine.
