Ihor Kozlovskyy, a religious scholar, scientist, and candidate of historical sciences who was held captive for two years in the temporarily occupied territory of Donetsk Region, has died.

The death of the scholar was reported by religious scholar Lyudmyla Filipovych. According to her, he died of a heart attack.

Ihor Kozlovskyy headed the Center for Religious Studies and worked at the Department of Philosophy at Donetsk National Technical University.

After the occupation of Donetsk, he stayed in the city to take care of his paralysed son. In January 2016, Kozlovsky was detained near his home. Armed with assault rifles, he was told that he had to go "for a talk" to the so-called Ministry of State Security, established by pro-Russian terrorists.

The terrorists claimed that the religious scholar allegedly kept grenades at home and "sentenced" him to two years and eight months in prison. Kozlovsky himself said that the terrorists did not like his ties to pro-Ukrainian students. Kozlovsky was tortured and recognised as a prisoner of conscience.

On 27 December, 2017, after two years of imprisonment, Kozlovsky was released from captivity.
