President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is considering holding presidential elections in the spring of 2024, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba has announced at a briefing, Sky News reports.

"We are not closing this page. The president of Ukraine is considering and weighing the different pros and cons," Kuleba said.

He added that holding elections during the war with Russia would entail "unprecedented" challenges. These include security risks, ensuring votes for hundreds of thousands of soldiers and for Ukrainians living abroad and under Russian occupation.

Under normal circumstances, presidential elections would be due to be held in March next year and Zelenskyy's five-year term would be coming to an end.

In peacetime, the presidential election in Ukraine would have been held in March 2024. However, under martial law, elections in Ukraine are suspended.

Zelenskyy has previously stated that he will run if the elections do take place. However, international financial assistance will be needed to cover the costs.

According to a poll conducted by the International Republican Institute (IRI), 62% of Ukrainians believe that elections should be held in Ukraine only after the war is over, no matter how long it lasts.

KIIS released the results of a survey in which 81% of respondents said they did not support holding elections during the war.
