Kuleba: Ukraine to avoid involvement in US election race

The debate in the US Congress over funding for aid, including for Ukraine, is not about Ukraine, but about the domestic political issue of the border with Mexico.

Next year, Ukraine will avoid getting involved in the US election race, Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba has said.

"We are fully aware of the risks and ... until the end of the US presidential election, no matter how it ends, we will avoid in every way possible any things, no matter where they come from, that will involve or use us in the election race. The purpose of this strategy is to maintain bipartisan support," Kuleba said.

The minister pointed out that the discussion in the US Congress about funding for aid, including for Ukraine, is not about Ukraine, but about the domestic political issue of the border with Mexico.

Kuleba noted that any domestic political issue that is important for the outcome of the US elections will outweigh any foreign policy issue regarding any part of the world.

"Now America, as a global power, has entered a process where domestic political issues - border security, homeless people in the streets, garbage collection, environment, energy - are becoming a super priority because politicians will fight for votes. In this context, it is a challenge how to keep Ukraine in the top priorities. So, in principle, there is nothing wrong with the US talking about Ukraine over the next year. The main thing is to say the right things that strengthen Ukraine and America," Kuleba concluded.
