On 15 May, Russian occupants shot a woman and a man who were trying to evacuate the city of Vovchansk, Kharkiv Region. This was reported by the Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor's Office.

According to the investigation, on 15 May, a 70-year-old man and his wife decided to evacuate from Vovchansk on their own. They were joined by another resident of the town.

"The man found a wheelchair and put his wife in it because she had been having problems with her legs for a long time. The three of them were heading towards Kharkiv. When the civilians were near the local hospital, the occupiers opened fire on them. The man who joined the couple and the woman died on the spot," the statement said.

The 70-year-old victim managed to escape and get to the outskirts of Vovchansk, where he was met by Ukrainian soldiers and taken to Kharkiv.

He was unable to take his wife's body because branches were stuck in the mechanical part of the wheelchair and it was impossible to move it.

"The man is currently safe, prosecutors have interrogated him. He said that the Russian military opened fire on them from a five-storey building they had occupied. The investigation is ongoing," the statement said.

Under the procedural supervision of the Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor's Office, a pre-trial investigation is underway in the criminal proceedings over violation of the laws and customs of war combined with premeditated murder (Part 2 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
