NATO members have elected Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte as their next secretary general, Reuters reports.
The publication notes that Rutte's appointment became a formality after his only rival for the post, Romanian President Klaus Iohannis, announced last week that he was withdrawing from the race because he failed to gain popularity.
Rutte will officially take office on 1 October. Until then, Jens Stoltenberg will continue to be NATO Secretary General.
Rutte is a supporter of Ukraine and has been supporting it since the beginning of the great war with Russia.
