The testimonies of the liberated Ukrainian soldiers confirm the systematic practice of torture in Russian captivity.

This was reported by the head of the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine, Danielle Belle, during a working meeting with the Secretary of the Coordination Headquarters, Dmytro Usov, the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War reports.

During the working meeting, they discussed the next thematic report of the Monitoring Mission, in particular its focus on the treatment of prisoners of war.

The Head of the UN Mission stressed that the report will have a large thematic section on the detention of Ukrainian prisoners of war in the Russian Federation and the temporarily occupied Ukrainian territories, as well as the treatment of Russian prisoners of war in Ukraine.

In particular, Belle stressed that "despite the relative improvement in the treatment of prisoners in some places of detention, the testimonies of the released Ukrainian military confirm the systematic practice of torture in captivity".

She expressed gratitude to the Ukrainian side for granting the mission access to places where Russian prisoners are held and ensuring the confidentiality of communication.

According to Usov, Ukraine is open to cooperation and provides all the necessary information, and counts on full and objective coverage of the situation with the observance of the rights of prisoners of war.

The meeting participants also discussed the current projects of the Coordination Headquarters aimed at intensifying the negotiation process and liberating Ukrainian citizens from Russian captivity.
