The Czech Republic will buy shells for Ukraine with the proceeds of frozen Russian assets.
This was announced by Czech Defence Minister Jana Černohová.
‘Part of the proceeds from the frozen Russian assets in the EU will be used to supply Ukraine with ammunition to be purchased by the Czech Republic. This is the decision of the European Union. This way, we can buy hundreds of thousands more units of large-calibre ammunition that Ukraine desperately needs. This is another proof of the allies‘ confidence in the Czech Republic and our ammunition initiative,’ Černohová wrote.
She noted that this is a unique opportunity to support Ukraine, use resources that originally belonged to Russia and preserve the public finances of European countries. In mid-July, the Czech Republic announced 100,000 shells for Ukraine by the end of the summer. President Petr Pavel said that ‘the goal is to supply 500,000 rounds of ammunition to Ukraine this year’.
