German Chancellor Olaf Scholz opposes the membership in NATO of a "country at war", reports Yevropeyska Pravda with reference to ZDF.
"A country at war cannot become a NATO member. Everyone knows this, there is no disagreement. And NATO usually links invitations to membership quite quickly," the chancellor said.
According to Scholz, the Alliance made a decision on Ukraine's accession prospects at the summits in Vilnius and Washington. Therefore, "there is no need for any new decisions beyond that".
The chancellor believes that the fact of Russian aggression requires balanced actions that guarantee support for Ukraine and at the same time ensure that it does not turn into a war between Russia and NATO.
"This is something where I am very clear about my position and I will not change it," Scholz said.
- Ukraine's accession to the Alliance is the first point of the victory plan that Volodymyr Zelenskyy presented to world leaders and recently stressed that there is no alternative for Ukraine in this matter.
- The Ukrainian president also said that the German side was sceptical about Ukraine's accession to NATO.
