The Russian army shot five captured soldiers near the village of Petrivka, Pokrovsk district. A criminal investigation has been opened, the Prosecutor General's Office said.

According to preliminary data, Russians stormed a position near Petrivka this month. Five soldiers were forced to retreat and hide in a private house.

‘After surrounding the house, the Russian military took the Ukrainian defenders prisoner. They were forced to leave the shelter unarmed and lie on the ground. In violation of international humanitarian law, the occupiers shot the Ukrainian prisoners with automatic weapons,’ the statement said.

  • This is not the only case of a war crime committed by Russians against POWs. The killing of prisoners of war is a violation of international law.
  • As of October, there were about a hundred cases of murder of Ukrainian prisoners.
