The UK has announced the introduction of the largest package of sanctions against thirty vessels of Russia's shadow fleet responsible for transporting billions of pounds worth of oil and oil products.
This is stated in the release of the British government.
‘The UK's largest package of sanctions against the shadow fleet targets 30 ships. Insurance companies that provide insurance for the fleet have also been subject to restrictions,’ the British government said in a statement.
Over the past year, 15 Russian vessels on the sanctions list have transported oil and oil products worth more than $4.3 billion
The total number of oil tankers under UK sanctions has reached 73, which is higher than any other country.
‘Restricting the transport of Russian oil, including the companies that insure these vessels, is essential to maintaining shared security: stopping the Kremlin's war machine, clearing shipping lanes of dangerous traffic and protecting international trade to make room for development,’ the statement said.
British Foreign Secretary David Lammy stressed the importance of continuing to put pressure on the Kremlin. He also added that oil revenues are a key source of funding for the war against Ukraine.
At a meeting of G7 foreign ministers in Italy, Lammy called on the international community to increase pressure on Russia and support Ukraine with military and financial assistance.
