- UNSC meetings under the Arria formula are held at the initiative of delegations of UN Security Council member states to provide Council members with the opportunity to receive information on a particular issue from a wide range of participants who are usually deprived of the opportunity to be heard during formal meetings of the Security Council.
- Such meetings can be held in closed (with the participation of UN Security Council members only) and open (for all UN Member States) formats and allow their participants to engage in direct dialogue with representatives of governments, international organisations and non-state actors on a wide range of issues on the Council's agenda.
